May. 24th, 2006 12:48 pmAlec layed lazily on the large couch down in the side room of the Inn. They still hadn't rebuilt the house yet because Verra wasn't done deciding what she wanted to do with it. She wanted a perfect house. So until then, they were living at the Inn.
It wasn't so bad. The family had a nice suite of rooms. But it wasn't home. Home was home.
As he laid there, Alec wiggled off one of the two rings that he wore. One was the wedding ring. That was a simple gold band and didn't come off. The other was a braided ring made of three metals; gold, silver and this other one that seemed to be alive and caught between the other two. It was the ring of the Ruling Council. Only members of the Ruling Council got one. The third metal was slightly different for each element, reddish orange for fire, blue for water, green for earth and white for water. And then there was his, gray, for all the elements.
He turned the ring around in his fingers watching that third metal glisten and move. There were only two others like it in the entire world. Zaladine had given it to him about a year ago. She said that the rings had just recently shown up in one of the storage spaces. He didn't know if he belived her or not.
She had been a good mother to him, but sometimes it seemed as she was up to something.
Probably trying to make him make something of himself.
She had said that the old laws hadn't changed in the reqirements for the council and since he was the only element wizard around he got an automatic seat. He wasn't happy about it. The other council members weren't happy about it. He was too young they said, (not wanting to say that they didn't want him around because he was dangerous) not even fifty yet. But Zaladine had been insistant.
So, he had a ring and a seat. Not that he did much. They never listened to him. He didn't understand half of what was going on and the other half he didn't care about.
She said it was his responsiblity.
"But what if I don't want it," he muttered.
