Again, hiding from the hot sun, Alec sat at one of the tables in the galley mess, flicking a coin between his fingers. The coin spun and flickered, sometimes not even there for a moment before returning. The one sailor had tried again, but the threat of Brand frightened him off. Of course, it seemed to have frighted everyone off. Leaving him with few choices for conversation.

Addie, his "betrothed" was one, but she was difficult to talk to. And Madam... well, she always seemed to have something else up her sleeves. He had no plans to go near the captain. As for Brand... well. He didn't know what to do about Brand.

Alec flicks out his fingers, "The crew is avoiding me out of fear of you, Addie is... sweet but not a great conversationalist, Madam well, yes..." The coin finally stops, on its edge. "And you. Unless you can think of someone else?"

"I am not the best conversationalist but I would not mind talking with you sometimes."

"I'm sure I could give you good practice. Or just... company."

He lifts his head up and gives a soft smile. "Good. Thank you."

He gave a small smile back,"You are welcome."

"Do you ever use contractions?"

He nodded," Occasionally."

"Why only sometimes?"

"Because I don't like using them all the time."

Resting his head on his arms, he almost asked the "it makes you sound weird" but as his accent seemed to fluctuate wildly, he supposed he didn't have much opinion in the matter. "Why not?"

He shrugged a little,"It's a habit.'

"What did you do... before?"

"Before I worked for the Madam? I was hired by various people to fix their problems."

"What sort of problems?"

"Whatever kind they had."

"Including potting plants?"

"Normally my services were for larger projects but I have taken care of plants."

"Anything you haven't done?"

"Very little I have not done."

He thinks about it. "Have you ever been a mother?"

"No." He shook his head.
