It was called the Isle of the Dragons. One huge Island out in the middle of Tarnet's Ocean where the dragons lived. It wasn't the only place you could find dragons, but it was the place that they called home. Everywhere else was their home away from home, even if they never had been to the Island. But every dragon went to the Island. There was only one town on the Island that had humans on it. There was only one town on the Island, a port for humans to come and trade with the dragons.

Dragons were the craftsmen of the world. Some stories said that they created humans. Dragons never commented on those stories. When asked about them they pretended they didn't hear the question and continue on a different subject.

Alec had been to the Island only once; to ask permission to marry Verra. Then he had come with her, they had flown over the island and met her parents in a cavern somewhere. Today he went the traditional human route. Off the docks to a hall where he could put in a message that he wanted to speak to a particular dragon. Or pair of dragons in this case.

The dragon (in human form) at the desk looked him over and snuffed. Humans and dragons did wed often enough, but still alot of times the other dragons weren't sure why or what have you. He was directed to the hall of waiting.

The hall was large and full of humans waiting for dragons. It was a plushy room, with comfortable couches and large stain glass windows that let in golden streaks of light. There were rooms off to the side for sleeping in, humans waited for dragons who kept their own schedual. Food was offered for a nominial price, the vendors were human. Alec bought a sweet bread filled with spiced meat to nervously munch on, avoiding the looks of the other humans.

They did stare at him. He looked like a fey at first and then they saw the tattoo and knew what he was. So he found a quiet corner to eat and watch the people and wait, drawing up the hood of his cloak to hide.

He didn't have long to wait. Lani and Philadon came swooping into the room and grabbed him, one dragon on each arm, lifting him up and dragging him out. They didn't heed his cries of pain when they manhandled his left arm, they didn't heed anything. When they were out of the building they returned to their dragon form, Philadon snatching Alec up in his talons, to dangle him way above the ground as they flew.

When they reached a cavern, Alec was flung into the back of it. He tried not to cry out in pain, but it was stone and it did hurt. Lani blocked the entrance, cutting off any light while her mate pinned Alec to the ground.

"What happened?" Philadon grounded out.

Alec tried to form sentences, but the words didn't come. Philadon pressed down on him, harder.

"She's dead!" Alec finally managed to cry out. "They're dead!"

Light entered the cavern as Lani came over, her snout pressing into his face. "Dead? How?"

"Massacre. At the Inn. Everyone dead!"

"You lie," Lani hissed.

"No! They're all dead. I saw it."

"Why not you?"

"I wasn't there. I was kept away. Distracted."

"Tell us everything," Philadon snarled, digging his talons into Alec.

Alec sobbed in pain and swallowed and told them, answering their questions, expanding when asked, not leaving out anything. When he was done all he could hear was the sounds of the two dragons breathing. They were silent for a long dragged out time before they started talking.

The two dragons spoke to each other in harsh noises, their own language. Obviously deciding what to do with him. The pressure on Alec never let up and he laid as still as he could, closing his eyes, wishing he wasn't there.

Finally Alec was picked up again, by Lani this time, her teeth grasping his cloak, nearly strangling him. She walked to the entrance of the cavern and flicked him out. There was a long, long drop before he hit the ground.

He rolled, not trying to stop himself, bouncing and hitting things. His chaos field negating the worst of the potentially bone breaking damage. When he did stop rolling, he struggled to his feet and staggered the rest of the way down to the ports.
