(no subject)

Since I don't celebrate Christmas I didn't give out presents. However, it is my birthday so I can do what I want and I'm giving out gifts for it.

Mel: A crystal Sue tear necklace and a vid on Jedi Training.
Orion: A new manicure set with all sorts of sparkly colors in it.
Triv: History of my world book. At least... from my people's point of view.
Sean; a cookbook from my world.
Leela: Tulla Berries cuttings, which are like strawberries and Blueberries. They're from my world.
Kaa: An illuminated manuscript of legends from my world.
Captain Hook: A pair of fencing Rapiers (From my older self)
Some: An original copy of How to Serve Men.
Gina: A locket with a picture of her and Lissa
Lissa: A matching Locket.
Ginger; A Sue tear necklace, a new gun, and an offer to partner up on a mission.
John Constantine: a book of spells from a place of questionable origin.

And everybody else that I can't think of gets something shiny. Actually everyone gets something shiny.

Thanks! Here, you might like this.

*Alec gets a shiny in return - actually two of them, a brace of long daggers made out of mithril.*

Ooooh! Shiny! They're lovely. Thanks. What's their story?

[identity profile] rurounitriv.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing as fancy as a battle with a Sue. I snuck past the Balrog to get the ore from the old mines in Moria, then split it with a dwarven smith in return for lessons in how to refine and forge it. These were the first weapons I ever made of mithril.

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. They're still very nicely made. *flips one around expertly* Balance well.

[identity profile] rurounitriv.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Well, they weren't the first weapons I ever made, just the first of mithril. Once you get the technique down, it's not all that different from any other kind of weaponsmithing.

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. Is Mithril that different from regular metal?

[identity profile] rurounitriv.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
The actual forging, not so much - but it is an alloy which needs a careful balance of strength and flexibility to be good for weapons. Pure mithril is about as good for blades as pure gold.

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
What other metals did you use? Is there iron in it? *this is useful to know for fighting against the Fey*

[identity profile] rurounitriv.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Some iron, some silver - which is one reason that another name for it is "silver-steel" - a few other things. It also takes to enchantment and blessings really well, I've found. I made the blade of my spear out of it, and I've yet to find a Fey, werewolf, or unholy beast that didn't hate getting hit by it.

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
Never been much for enchanting weapons... mostly because I don't know how. *he looks at the knives*

[identity profile] rurounitriv.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's best done in the forging, actually - anything that's done on a pre-made weapon doesn't really become part of the fabric of the weapon. Of course, this means that if something breaks the enchantment it will sometimes have rather bad effects on the weapon, but that's true for most enchanted items.

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
That makes sense. Sometimes I worry what'll happen if something ever breaks the enchantments on my sword.

[identity profile] rurounitriv.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
I would advise you to do everything possible to avoid having that happen.

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the sword's been around for three thousand years and it still is there, so I think it's a bit durable.

[identity profile] rurounitriv.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but it didn't have to deal with you all that time, did it? *grin*

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
Hah. Hah. Hah. It has been world walking before me.

[identity profile] rurounitriv.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
Two words: chaos field.

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
Okay. Yes. That is a point.
