The tavern bar was unusually crowded for the evening. Alec found himself sitting at the furthest end away from the door almost crunched up against the wall. He could feel the swirl of emotions whispering on the fringes of his mind, rather like the conversations he could hear with his ears. He sat with his beer between his hands staring at the bar counter. He had only come to the bar to get away from his brother and sister, not because he wanted to be out and about. Several people approached him and proposition him, but he shook them off, not interested. He had been feeling odd ever since he had returned to the city. Trapped and restless. He missed traveling with his grandfather. He liked it, seeing all the new places and new people.
A change in the mental voices caused him to raise his head. Someone new had walked into the tavern. He was a tall and handsome young man with auburn hair and hazel eyes and a smirk on his face. He also looked very familiar. Alec frowned, trying to figure out where he had seen the young man. Then their eyes met and Alec knew exactly who he was.
“Jono!” he gasped quietly.
Jono pushed his way through the crowd to stop behind Alec. He reached a hand up to brush it across Alec’s shoulder. “Hello Alec… haven’t seen you in a long time,” he said with a purr. Alec looked up at him.
“Yeah… I guess.”
“We were what… kids? You grew up nice.” The hand traveled up Alec’s neck to play in his hair.
“Um…”
“Come, dance with me.”
Sighing, Alec said, “I’d really rather not.”
The hand tensed and stopped playing. “It wasn’t a question,” Jono said in a low voice. Alec’s eyes widened, and he leaned back to look at Jono, who smiled. Something slammed into his mind, breaking through all his carefully built shields.
Then Alec woke up. He was naked in a bed, an arm wrapped possessively around him. The room was drenched in the fading emotions of sex and lust. He twisted around to see Jono sleeping. He frowned, trying to remember how he had gotten there, in the bed. His memory blurred and fuzzed around the edges, refusing to settle down into anything coherent. Jono’s eyes fluttered open and he smiled with a lazy stretch. He then leaned over and gave Alec a kiss. Alec pulled away, his mind roiling with confusion.
“That was good,” Jono said.
“What happened…?”
Jono ran a finger down Alec’s face, “Nothing you need to worry about.”
“Nothing I need to worry about? I don’t know what happened! And we’re in bed together!”
“Shh… you’re getting all hysterical. There’s no need to get hysterical.” Jono’s voice soothed. “At least not yet.”
“Not yet?” Alec’s voice cracked. He struggled to get out of the bed, but Jono grabbed his arm and pulled him back into the bed.
“Alec, calm down. Just calm down and come here.”
Alec didn’t want to, but he found himself doing it anyway, letting Jono wrap himself around his body.
Nuzzling him, Jono said, “Much better. Isn’t this nice?”
“Nngh.”
“Of course it is. Do you want to know something?’
Silence as Jono waited for him to answer. Sighing, Alec said, “What?”
“I’m the Oracle now. That’s where we are, in the Temple.”
This got Alec’s attention and he twisted around to look at Jono, “When did this happen… I mean… you never…last time I saw you…?”
Jono kissed him lightly, “It was rather unexpected. When I was sixteen. You were long gone from the city. I missed you so much. So glad you’re back. But yes. I started having visions when I was sixteen. I was brought to the temple to get… training. We worked together for a few months and then… she died.” He laughed, “I wish I could say that I saw it coming… but, it was a total surprise to me.”
“Wow… I mean…”
“Now I’m the most important person in the city.” He tilted his head and drew a finger down Alec’s chest. “Though… you… you on the other hand… gods… an element wizard! Why when that comes out…who knows what’ll happen!”
“It’s not going to come out,” Alec said hotly, not even bothering to wonder how Jono knew about that.
“Of course it’s going to come out. You can’t keep it hidden forever.” He rolled on top of Alec, pinning him down to the bed. “Besides, the council already knows.”
“How do you know?”
“Because it’s my job to know these things,” he said, biting down on a shoulder, watching as Alec squirmed.
“Ah-ha…” He wanted to flinch away, but he couldn’t move. Jono rocked against him, eyes locked on his. Alec let out a shivering sigh. Jono smirked and rolled off of him.
“And you are so beautiful,” he purred. His head swung suddenly towards the rest of the room and he snarled. He pushed himself out of the bed and started pulling on clothes. “I’ve got to go… they’ll be coming for me soon. I’ll have one of the priests lead you out.”
Alec watched him confused. He really didn’t have any idea what was going on. What he was supposed to do. Slowly he slid out of the bed, his body protesting in aches. He found his clothes, which were scattered around the room, and started to pull them on as well. As he struggled to put his shirt on something stung on his chest. Looking down he saw a long fine cut across his abdomen. He ran his fingers across it lightly and shivered, glancing over at Jono, but the other boy wasn’t paying him any attention. He thought about bringing it up, but something made him stop. Instead he finished putting on his shirt.
Finished dressing, Jono came over to him and kissed him again. “I’ll see you later, I promise,” he said, lingering close. Then he turned and strode out of the room.
Aching in places that he hadn’t ached in ages Alec pushed his way into the house. His mind roiled and danced as he tried to pull the fragments of memory of last night into some sort order. But nothing would come. After going to the tavern last night he couldn’t recall anything until waking up that morning. Rubbing his face he almost walked right into Laruna.
“Alec! Where were you?”
“What? Where… ?”
“You didn’t come home last night, where were you?”
“Oh… um… “he blinked and shook his head, trying to get the fuzziness out of it, “I was with Jono.”
“Jono? I thought…you didn’t like him.”
“I ah… um… yeah. I’m not feeling well… think I’m going to lie down.”
Laruna grabbed him by the arm, “Alec…?” Alec wrenched his arm free, glowering at her.
“I’m just going to lie down, okay?” he snapped. “It’s not like something bad happened.”
Stepping back, Laruna held up her hands defensively, “It’s all right Alec, I’m not saying that.”
“Well. Good,” he said and ran up the stairs, to avoid further questions. Once in his room he locked the door and slumped onto the floor, back against the door. He took several deep shuddering breathes before letting out a sob. Another shuddering breath and he started to cry. He didn’t know why he was crying, just that he was. Frustration at not knowing what happened, perhaps, or … well… he didn’t want to think about that. No. He couldn’t, wouldn’t. Just. But he couldn’t stop crying. It was as if his body was reacting to something his mind wouldn’t let him know about. Couldn’t let him know about. He didn’t know, he couldn’t think and he hurt so badly.
After a while he curled up on the floor, unable to sit up any more. He cried until he couldn’t cry anymore then he just lay on the floor. Eventually he drifted off into an uneasy sleep.
Waking up again, he found himself stiffer than before. The floor definitely wasn’t the place to fall asleep. He uncurled slowly, pushing himself up onto his knees; he crawled over to his bed. Resting his head against the blankets, he breathed deeply, seeing if he would cry again. It didn’t seem like he would, which made him relax considerably. Closing his eyes he sighed. Okay, he had a handle on this. He did. It was just a one time thing. Had to be. And his memories would come back. Taking several deep breaths he stood up slowly and stumbled for the bathingroom.
He needed a shower and badly. He could still feel the stickiness and sweat from the sex. The sex he knew happened but couldn’t remember. But it had to have happened. He knew it happened. It had been plastered over the room. And he felt it in every ache of his body.
Clothes were dragged off of him and then he stood in the shower, letting the water run over him. He didn’t scrub right away; he just wanted to feel the water flow over him. One hand reached up to touch the cut on his chest, running over it lightly. It didn’t hurt, stung some, but didn’t hurt. Taking deep breaths he reached for the scrub and soap and started to scrub his skin raw. The water ran cold, and he didn’t bother to warm it up, he just scrubbed hard.
When he didn’t think that he could scrub off any more skin he finally turned off the water and proceeded to rub him self dry. His skin stung now, especially around the cut, but he felt clean. Sort of. Maybe. Close to clean. He kicked his clothes, not wanting to wear them again. Towel wrapped around him he retreated to his room and found clean clothes.
Barefoot he went down stairs to find something to eat. Maybe. He didn’t know if he could handle food right then. But it didn’t hurt to try. Coming into the kitchen he was startled to see his brother there.
“What are you doing here Wolf?”
“School’s out.”
“It is…? What time is it?”
“Three past.”
Alec stared at him. Where had the day gone? “I … um…I didn’t realize that.”
Greywolf looked at him puzzled. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah… yeah… I’m fine… I’m fine. Just… off day.” He forced on a smile and went in search in food.
